Trauma is an experience or series of experiences. PTSD is a specific diagnosis with defined symptom clusters.

PTSD requires exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence — with persistent symptoms for more than one month.

Many people have trauma-related symptoms without full PTSD.

Both may benefit from psychiatric care — especially when sleep, mood, or safety are affected.

Evaluation clarifies diagnosis and appropriate treatment, including medication for nightmares or hyperarousal when indicated.
