ADHD Medication Basics: What Adults Should Know

Considering ADHD medication? Learn about stimulant and non-stimulant options and what evaluation involves.

By Astrude Charles, PMHNP-BCMarch 14, 20261 min read

ADHD medications include stimulants (such as methylphenidate and amphetamine-based options) and non-stimulants (such as atomoxetine and viloxazine).

Stimulants are often effective but require monitoring for blood pressure, heart rate, sleep, and appetite effects.

Non-stimulants may be preferred when stimulants are not tolerated or when co-occurring anxiety is prominent.

Medication is never automatic. Your PMHNP reviews cardiac history, substance use, and goals before recommending options.

Telehealth follow-up allows dose adjustments and side-effect monitoring from home in licensed states.
